FSU Leadership Development Program for Department Chairs, 2017-2018
Dr. Anderson is currently Assistant Vice President for Research and Academic Affairs, and Professor of Social Work at Florida State University (FSU).
In these roles, he works with faculty and administrators to advance the research mission of the university and to facilitate the success of emerging academic leaders. A major focus of his work at FSU is on working with faculty and administrators individually or in groups to help them accomplish their leadership or academic goals.
Dr. Anderson designed and leads the FSU Faculty Leadership Development Program (FSU LDP). This program is designed to offer leadership training to faculty across the university and at different stages of their professional journeys. The program is based in part on the philosophy that leadership development is an ongoing, never-ending process, and is important whether one is in a designated leadership “position” or not.
The signature offering of the FSU LDP is the Leadership Development Program for Department Chairs. This program is designed to facilitate the continued growth of department chairs as leaders, and to assist them in identifying and accomplishing specific leadership and departmental goals over the course of an academic year. The program includes, among other things, self-assessments and 360 (observer) assessments, monthly classroom lectures/discussions/exercises, one-on-one coaching, identification of leadership goals and strategies, and learning about and practicing behaviors shown to facilitate leader effectiveness. A similar program focuses on leadership development in Emerging Leaders. Participants in the Emerging Leaders program are nominated to participate by their respective Deans.
